General Information

Camp Farley (also known as 4-H Camp Farley) was founded in 1934 and is independently owned and operated by the Cape Cod Camp Corporation, a non-profit organization representing Southeastern Massachusetts. Camp Farley's summer camp is conducted in cooperation with the UMass Extension System and United States Department of Agriculture. The program meets or exceeds regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for operating a children's camp and is licensed by the Board of Health. Camp Farley has a commitment to safe and quality programming, and is accredited by the American Camp Association. As such, Camp Farley undergoes a comprehensive process of operational review – from staff qualifications to training to emergency management – to ensure compliance with more than 300 standards. The American Camp Association collaborates with experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth services to assure that current practices reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards. ACA standards are the standards for best practice in camp operations.

Camp Farley's small, family-oriented summer program has a strong environmental focus and offers comprehensive experiences in the context of a traditional camp setting. The ability to offer high quality programs at reasonable fees is made possible through the generous support of individuals and community organizations. Camp Farley and UMass Extension offer programs and employment without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin. A more complete discrimination statement can be found in About 4-H & Camp Farley.

PHILOSOPHY
Campers expect lots of fun and excitement while attending Camp Farley's summer programs, but they receive a great deal more. Youngsters learn while participating in various program activities and--more importantly--they develop self-esteem, and a positive attitude and understanding of their world. Camp Farley's programs are designed to educate and develop youth in acquiring life skills of communication, problem solving, decision making, and leadership. Groups participate together and separately in conventional and innovative programs designed for their age and interest. Camp Farley's structured weekly format, daily electives, and visiting specialists provide a balanced variety of fun, educational activities within a traditional summer camp setting.

CAMP FARLEY PROGRAM GOALS
  • to have fun,
  • to learn about the outdoors,
  • to learn to live, work and play with others,
  • to learn self-reliance,
  • to learn to get along away from home,
  • to increase confidence and self-esteem,
  • to develop some new skills and interests.
CAMPER DEVELOPMENT GOALS
  1. To build character and foster a sense of self-worth. To help youth to express and understand their feelings.
  2. To meet and learn to get along with, and enjoy and appreciate a variety of, other people and groups. Emphasis is placed on being cooperative as a member of a group and sharing experiences, successes and responsibilities.
  3. To learn to do useful things that are difficult to accomplish. To encourage youth to try new adventures. To promote healthy risk taking and coping with frustration.
  4. To develop intelligent leadership and fellowship abilities.
  5. To experience group responsibilities and ways of assuming them.
  6. To be inspired to be better citizens in the home and community. To create a social environment which values diversity, models acceptance of diversity and values individual contributions to the community.
  7. To provide opportunities for youth to experience success.
  8. To minimize individual competition.
  9. To treat each child as an individual not to be compared with others.
  10. To promote responsible stewardship of our natural resources through a greater understanding, awareness and appreciation of the natural world and our relationship to it.

CAMP STAFF
Michael Campbell , a Cape Cod native with over two decades of experience in youth education, has been Camp Farley's Executive Director since 1989. Joyce Oberthal , a certified teacher, has worked at Camp Farley since 1994 and been its Summer Camp Director since 2002. Any questions regarding special camper considerations may be addressed to her. During check-in, please feel free to consult with Camp Farley 's Resident Nurse with any specific medical questions or concerns.

Our culturally diverse employees typically include mature and qualified program professionals, camp nurse, behavioral specialist, food service staff, and other licensed and/or certified personnel. Program staff are recruited from across the country and overseas with specialized skills and a demonstrated affinity for working with youngsters, and all camp staff undergo a comprehensive employment and criminal history investigation. The minimum age of Camp Farley counselors is 18 years of age. On rare occasions, former campers who have successfully completed Camp Farley's counselor training program, may be hired at 17 years of age as junior counselors. In addition to Camp Farley s on-call pediatrician (Dr. Alex Heard of Sandwich), a resident nurse and a staff behavioral specialist are on staff to provide overall support for all program participants.

CAMP FOOD
Camp Farley strives to make every camping experience a positive one, and recognizes the importance of providing delicious and well-balanced meals and snacks. (see below to view our menus.) While it is impossible to satisfy every individual within a group setting, our camp meals are designed for popular appeal, incorporate a variety of offerings, and make adjustments for vegetarian needs. Breakfasts typically include a hot entree, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, as well as a choice between a sweet and non-sweet cereal. Lunches typically include hot soup & sandwich, with peanut butter and/or jelly sandwiches always available as an alternative option. When possible and/or deemed appropriate, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches may also be available as an alternative to dinner entrees.

Vegetarians: A vegetarian option [indicated in italics on the menu] is included when deemed necessary or appropriate. Otherwise, vegetarians are expected to be as flexible as omnivore campers and staff. In order to assist with meal planning, please note that vegetarian options are available only to campers and staff who have indicated this preference upon arrival to camp, and who abide by their stated choice throughout the week.

Our staff make every attempt to encourage campers to use good table manners, make healthy eating choices, and be open to new food experiences. Please note that due to practical constraints and camp philosophy, we do not provide individual/alternative selections to our menu. Campers experience a number of growth opportunities while attending camp, and being flexible about trying different foods is part of the overall beneficial experience of camp. The following menus reflect the planned items to be served campers and staff during the camping season.
